Finally!
The long anticipated definitive book on the history of the Lyman Boat Works is off the press and orders are now being taken.

Not since the release of Rodengen's historic The Legend of Chris-Craft has a nautical history been as eagerly awaited.

Lyman is one of the few truly great names in American boatbuilding. Founded by cabinetmaker Bernard Lyman in 1875, Lyman Boats quickly established a regional reputation for quality lapstrake rowboats and sailboats.

Bernard's son Bill grew up in the business and eventually made Lyman a nationally known name with reliable outboards, using ever-more-refined versions of a classic lapstrake hull. The company moved to Sandusky, Ohio, expanded its offerings, helped establish the "utility boat" as a favorite among the boating public, and began offering inboards as well as outboards as it survived the Depression.

Following World War II, Lyman production expanded to more than 4,000 boats a year, giving thousands of Americans years of enjoyment at the helm of a Lyman. As Peter Spectre has written in Wooden Boat of the days when new Lyman boats were king, "Anybody who had an appreciation for powerboats of any kind had a Lyman or wanted a Lyman, or knew someone who had a Lyman or was saving up his money to buy a Lyman." Today, the same can be said of antique and classic Lyman lapstrakes, which are rapidly gaining in popularity and value among collectors.
